LANSING — Following weeks of bipartisan negotiations, the House passed a sweeping overhaul of Michigan’s auto insurance system today. The final bill includes several provisions put forward by House Democrats including the elimination of non-driving rate-setting factors, guaranteed rate reductions and increased consumer protections. In response, state Rep. Padma Kuppa (D-Troy) issued the following statement:
“Today, after decades of waiting for affordable auto insurance rates, Michigan is finally getting a better deal that will lower rates for the families of Troy and Clawson. After so long, we now will have an insurance system that can no longer increase rates for drivers based on discriminatory non-driving factors like gender, occupation or zip code, with more transparency and accountability. I am proud to stand with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this important work done. Michiganders deserve fair and affordable auto insurance that works for everyone, and I am ready to roll up my sleeves and continue to make even more improvements moving forward.”
