LANSING— June 10 marks the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment by the state of Michigan. Last week, House Democratic Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) and Sen. Winnie Brinks (D-Grand Rapids) introduced House Resolution 119 and Senate Resolution 29 respectively, commemorating the June 10 anniversary.
“For one hundred years, the daughters, granddaughters and great-granddaughters of the women who fought so hard to extend the right to vote to women have been making their voices heard at the polls,” said Leader Greig. “Now, women are running for and holding elected offices in unprecedented numbers, including across our own state. The hard work of the men and women allied in the fight for women's voting rights cannot be understated. Today, we honor their sacrifices and tenacity while reaffirming our commitment to uplifting the voices of women in our state.”
“This milestone anniversary reminds us just how far we’ve come toward political equality, but also highlights how much further we have to go,” said Sen. Brinks. “The last few years we have seen a resurgence in women’s movements committed to continuing the fight for equal rights. Just like our predecessors, we may face hardships and resistance, but, inspired by the perseverance of those that have come before us, we will prevail.”
