LANSING — Gov. Whitmer’s office announced Executive Order 16 yesterday, establishing a task force on empowering women in athletics. The task force will bring together local and national leaders in sports and education to evaluate the gender inequities in athletic programs, develop strategies to support and promote opportunities for girls and women in sports and position Michigan as a leader in creating and advancing women leaders. In response to this Executive Order, House Democratic Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:
“The confidence, resilience, and determination that female athletes develop while participating in sports gives them a strong foundation for future leadership positions. As a young athlete, volleyball, softball and tennis played an integral part in developing my leadership and teamwork skills, lessons that are invaluable to me personally and as a legislator. I applaud the creation of this task force and look forward to working with the governor to ensure other young women and girls have access to the same opportunities I was able to benefit from, and that we’re able to train Michigan’s next generation of women leaders.”
