CHARLOTTE — Today, state Rep. Angela Witwer (Delta Township) was joined by Gov. Whitmer and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Gary McDowell for a visit to Smuts Farm in Charlotte to observe damage caused by heavy rain and severe weather. This has been one of the wettest years on record in Michigan and the three gathered at the local farm to better understand how to aid farmers throughout the state.
“As one of Michigan’s largest industries, farming is incredibly important to the wellbeing of our communities,” said Witwer. “Not only does it provide financial security for families, but it also plays an important role in fueling our economy. The consequences of crop damage like we saw today can be both devastating and far-reaching, and we need to do all we can to help anyone affected.”
The governor also signed House Bill 4234 during the visit, implementing a $15 million supplemental appropriation for the Qualified Agricultural Loan Origination Program for farmers who have encountered financial distress caused by crop loss or damage.
