DEARBORN — State Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) hosted a town hall with special guest state Sen. Sylvia Santana (D-Detroit) in Dearborn this week focusing on the recent auto insurance reform signed into law by Gov. Whitmer. The event provided community members with more information regarding the changes Michigan drivers can expect once the law takes effect in July of 2020. Attendees also had the opportunity to have their concerns addressed and questions answered.
“It’s always been my mission to ensure our community members are well informed about important changes before new systems go into effect,” said Hammoud. “While these changes are still a year away, it’s important to start having these discussions as early as we can to prepare our drivers for decisions they must make about their auto insurance coverage down the road. I look forward to continuing to facilitate these conversations throughout the next year.”
Changes include prohibiting several non-driving factors in rate setting like gender, education and marital status; a new rate approval system to protect consumers; increased transparency of the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association; a dedicated Anti-Fraud Unit; and different levels of benefit coverage for Personal Injury Protection (PIP).
