FLINT — An estimated 2 million gallons of untreated city of Flint sewage was dumped into the Flint River. The report filed by the city with EGLE cites flash flooding as the reason for the spill. Several officials have expressed concern that Flint’s wastewater infrastructure is at a critical point and that the city may not be able to treat its wastewater and sewage effectively. An advisory has been issued warning people to avoid contact with the river because of the spill. In response, Rep. Sheldon Neeley (D-Flint) issued the following statement:
“Clean water is more than a human right: it is life. We cannot risk the safety and security of our communities and environment again because of negligence and neglect. We must improve our critical infrastructure to treat our water, and we need our local leaders to understand the severity and danger of allowing inaction to continue. I am committed to making sure we not only have clean water for our homes but also flowing through our communities.”
