BAY CITY — The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) announced this week that it will be awarding Rural Electronics Recycling Grants totaling $269,540 to communities across Michigan. Bay City was one of the named recipients of grant funding to support and establish a permanent drop-off site for e-waste in the community. State Rep. Brian Elder (D-Bay City) welcomed the news and noted that encouraging the proper disposal of electronics will prevent environmental hazards.
“When we think of the importance of recycling, our focus often is on plastic and paper products,” said Elder. “This grant will finally allow us to provide the necessary resources to begin broadening our efforts to include electronics and the precious metals they contain. I’m grateful our community will be receiving this funding to strengthen our environmental stewardship.”
In addition to a permanent drop-off site, the grant will also fund various e-waste events in rural areas of Bay County using collection trailers.
