LANSING — The Committee on Michigan’s Mining Future marked its first informal meeting in Lansing on Wednesday, Oct. 23, with a ceremonial photograph with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette). Cambensy introduced the bill creating the committee in February, which will now be responsible for making advisory legislative and policy recommendations to strengthen and develop sustainable mining practices in Michigan.

The meeting was also attended by Harold Fitch of Harold Fitch Consulting; Michigan Economic Development Corporation Director Jeff Mason; Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) Oil and Gas Division Director Adam Wygant; Eagle Mine External Relations Manager Matthew Johnson; EGLE Director Liesl Clark; Michigan Environmental Council Policy Director Sean Hammond; Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Natural Resources Department Director Evelyn Ravindran; Michigan Technological University Professors Snehamoy Chatterjee and Tim Eisele and; United Steelworkers Local 4950 President Chad Korpi.

Committee members unable to attend were Michigan Paving & Materials President Richard W. Becker; University of Michigan Professor Emeritus Stephen Kesler; Cleveland Cliff’s Ishpeming Iron Ore Mining and Processing General Manager James M. Kochevar; Superior Watershed Partnership Board Jerome I. Maynard; Tilden Township Board Trustee and Marquette County Land Bank Authority Secretary and Treasurer Deborah L. Pellow; and Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Daniel Eichinger.
