LANSING, Mich., March 5, 2020 — The Michigan House of Representatives unanimously approved House Resolution 238 this week, introduced by state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) to declare March as Social Work Month in the state of Michigan. Social work remains one of the fastest-growing professions in the nation, with over 23,000 social workers employed in Michigan as of 2017.
“As powerful advocates for equity, social workers have served as integral forces of change on behalf of our state’s residents for more than a century,” said Hammoud. “By naming this month in their honor, we’re proud to recognize these compassionate and innovative individuals who devote themselves to protecting and enhancing the lives of some of our most vulnerable neighbors.”
A diverse profession, social workers work in a variety of fields and environments including schools, centers for veterans, the military, hospitals and mental health centers, corporations, and local, state and federal government. Historically, the social work profession has been at the forefront of movements pushing for change in the United States, including the establishment of a minimum wage, improved workplace safety and other social safety net programs fighting hunger and poverty.
