LANSING, Mich., Dec. 2, 2020, — Undeterred by the near unanimous rejection of numerous meritless lawsuits designed to disenfranchise millions of legally-cast ballots in various battleground states — including Michigan — Michigan House Republicans continue their efforts to spread disinformation with the appearance of Rudy Giuliani and his parade of discredited witnesses at the House Oversight Committee. The Republicans also violated House Rules and the law when they denied Democratic members the ability to swear in these witnesses.
The Trump campaign and its supporters have filed 40 lawsuits across the country seeking to overturn the results of the November election. To date, they have lost 39. Here in Michigan alone, at least eight such lawsuits have been filed since Election Day. Six have already been thrown out of court, while two are awaiting action. President Trump’s own Attorney General, Bill Barr, has said that there is no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
“It is unconscionable that our Republican colleagues chose to provide a platform for partisan charlatans to spread disinformation and undermine a free and fair election that has already been decided by Michigan voters and certified by all 83 bipartisan county boards of canvassers and the State Board of Canvassers,” said House Democratic Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills). “As Michiganders continue to lose their lives and livelihoods to a deadly pandemic, Republican legislators remain laser-focused on political theater, undermining our democracy, and diminishing the people’s trust in their state legislature.”
Throughout this pandemic, Republican legislators have continuously abdicated their responsibilities and failed the people of Michigan. First, Republican legislators neglected to engage in the state’s pandemic response by enacting necessary legislation to help Michiganders during this unprecedented public health crisis. While there are approximately 200 legislative bills being considered this week in the Michigan House, less than a handful are related to the pandemic response. Now, they’re at it again with our electoral process.
“Michiganders are facing evictions, loss businesses and wages and are in desperate need of assistance that the Legislature must provide now,” continued Greig. “Wasting scarce taxpayer resources on blatant partisan theatrics while Michiganders struggle to meet their basic needs is deplorable. It’s time for my Republican colleagues to redirect their efforts and energy to supporting the people of Michigan.”
