LANSING — State Rep. Kyra Bolden (D-Southfield) introduced House Resolution 7 today to designate Jan. 15, 2019, as a day of action to commemorate Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) Sorority’s Founders’ Day. Founded in 1908 at Howard University, AKA is the first Greek-letter sorority to be established by African-American college women. The organization aims to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and friendship, and alleviate the problems girls and women face in order to improve their social stature. The sisterhood is committed to service to all mankind; and over the 111 years of its existence, the sorority has grown to include nearly 300,000 members worldwide. The resolution, Bolden’s first, was approved by the House.
“AKA is a powerful sisterhood. This organization represents the core values I hold true, service to ALL mankind,” said Bolden. “AKA sisters embody a commitment to scholarship, leadership, civic engagement, and public service, qualities I strive to uphold each day. I am eternally grateful for the support and community that I found within this sisterhood and I hope that the values of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority will continue to inspire others to live a life committed to service.”
