NOVI, Mich., Aug. 1, 2024 — The Detroit News reported today that Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine from Novi, was released by Russia in a major prisoner swap with the U.S. after five and a half years of wrongful detainment. Whelan is finally free and returning home to Michigan after being jailed by Russia and sentenced to 16 years’ imprisonment on the basis of espionage charges both he and his employer denied. State Rep. Kelly Breen (D-Novi), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, issued the following statement regarding Whelan’s return home:
“I am overjoyed to welcome Paul Whelan back home to Michigan. My heart goes out to Paul, the Whelan family and his loved ones in the Novi community for the unimaginable hardship they have endured. This day is long overdue, and I want to express my gratitude to President Biden, Vice President Harris, Rep. Haley Stevens, Rep. Debbie Dingell and all of those who worked tirelessly and never gave up on bringing Paul home. Paul’s strength, tenacity and faith are truly unmatched, and I wish the Whelan family many days of recovery and immense joy to come.”
