LANSING, Mich., Aug. 29, 2025 — This week, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill. Following D.C. Republicans’ playbook, the House Republican budget cuts necessary programs and services that Michiganders rely on, from Medicaid to food assistance to public safety. After voting no on House Bill 4706, state Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Twp.) released the following statement:
“Not only did House Republicans fail to get a school budget negotiated and enacted, leaving schools without critical funding and leading some, to cancel school meals, they also failed to provide Michiganders with the support and relief they need at a time of growing economic uncertainty and rising prices. Their proposed budget guts hundreds of millions of dollars in food assistance and at this point, I’m starting to think that Republicans want hungry kids and families. Michiganders deserve healthy, affordable food and this budget further starves families from the support they deserve.
“This is all on top of slashing billions of dollars in state funding, including nearly $5 billion in Medicaid and health and human services funding. Budgets represent values and it’s clear that the Republicans would rather shout about supposed ‘waste, fraud and abuse’ than actually provide Michiganders with what they need to succeed. This budget will do nothing but take our state backward. I’m here to fund school meals, make sure people have access to affordable care and ensure education funding for our students. I wish my colleagues across the aisle had the same goals.”
