Bill will end the prohibition on dark sky preserves in the U.P.
LANSING, Mich., June 10, 2025 — A bill introduced by state Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Twp.), would remove a prohibition on establishing dark sky preserves in the Upper Peninsula. Currently, Michigan has six dark sky preserves, but none are in the U.P.
“Michiganders and tourists alike want to be able to enjoy our beautiful night skies for years to come,” Brixie said. “By getting rid of this needless prohibition, we can protect our unique dark sky spaces while also reaping the economic benefits from the ever-growing astro-tourism industry, which has the potential to bring billions annually to the state — the time to protect our dark skies is now.”
“I’ve lived all my life in the north country. What we have up here is rare,” said Aimee Cree Dunn, a central U.P. resident. “Today most people do not know what it’s like to live under dark skies, to just walk out on the porch and take in the beauty of the stars. As Yoopers, we have as much of a right to defend our dark skies as downstate does.”
There has been a prohibition on establishing these preserves in the U.P. since 2012. The bill would remove an unnecessary regulation and give state lands in the U.P. the same rights to be designated as dark sky preserves as those below the Mackinac Bridge.
“The beauty of the Upper Peninsula does not end with the setting sun. Let’s protect and promote the nocturnal beauty of the U.P. by allowing the establishment of Michigan dark sky preserves,” said Robert Parrish, founder of Dr. Lawless International Dark Sky Park in Cass County.
The University of Michigan found that light pollution increases globally by 10% each year. The bill ensures that the U.P. has the same rights as downstate to protect their spectacular night skies.
“Ending the prohibition on dark sky preserves in the Upper Peninsula is a win-win for everyone,” said Tom Grotewohl, a western U.P. resident. “This benefits wildlife and human stargazers alike and is a perfect opportunity to unite us in these divided times: no matter who you are, the same stars shine down on all of us!”
