LANSING — Today, the House passed a School Aid Fund budget that falls well short of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s budget recommendation to address Michigan’s declining literacy and STEM education scores. In response, state Rep. Julie Brixie (D-Meridian Township) issued the following statement:

“I voted against the School Aid Fund Budget today which fails to keep up with inflation and is nowhere near the generational investment we need and Gov. Whitmer proposed. Michigan is the only state to have our fourth-grade reading proficiency decline since 2003 and over half of our fourth graders are not reading proficiently. We have a moral obligation to ensure our children have the resources they need to realize their potential. The money we need is there, the problem is we are still raiding the school aid fund to pay for billions in corporate tax breaks.”
