LANSING, Mich., Aug. 11, 2021 — Today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced the awarding of a combined $3.7 million in road funding grants to small cities and villages. The city of Munising will receive $260,000, a 51% match, for repairs to Superior Street, Elm Avenue, Maple Street and Birch Street. The city of Ishpeming will be matched more than $213,000 for repairs to Prairie Avenue, Lower Bigelow Street, Stone Street and Houghton Street. In response, state Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) issued the following statement:

“I am pleased that the cities of Munising and Ishpeming in the 109th House District received Category B Grants from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Due to a small tax base, our rural U.P. communities often struggle when it comes to making large infrastructure investments on their own. These types of grants from MDOT are critical for them to make sizable upgrades that they otherwise wouldn’t have the funding or bonding capacity for.”
