LANSING — As part of House Democrats’ comprehensive Supporting MI Veterans package, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown) unveiled his bill today to allow honorably discharged veterans with disabilities to purchase up to five special vehicle registration plates with the Disabled Veteran (DV) designation. Currently, Michigan veterans who are permanently disabled are limited to a single special registration plate with this designation.
“Our veterans deserve to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity for the sacrifices they’ve made for all of us, and that includes ensuring they are recognized for their service in any vehicle they choose to drive,” said Camilleri. “We’re forever indebted to all those who have fought to keep us safe, and I’m proud to join my colleagues in this package supporting the heroes who have served our country.”
Michigan is home to the 11th largest veteran population in the nation, with over 550,000 veterans accounting for over 7 percent of the state’s adult population. The Supporting MI Veterans package is comprised of over 20 bills from more than 20 different sponsors to provide comprehensive support from waiving teaching license and medical record fees, providing property tax credits and free public transportation, to creating a special hotline for reporting instances of abuse, neglect or exploitation.
