LANSING, Mich., Feb. 25, 2020 — State Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown) introduced House Bill 5557 today to help students struggling with attendance back on the path to success. Camilleri’s bill would prevent school districts expelling or suspending students on the basis of attendance.

“By expelling or suspending students who miss class, schools are making things worse — adding to the school-to-prison pipeline and deserting kids when they need our support the most,” said Camilleri. “We need to be doing everything we can to bring students who struggle with attendance back into the classroom, not closing our doors to them.”
