LANSING — House Republicans approved Senate Bill 1176 today which will exempt nonprofit entities capable of making political contributions from having to publicly disclose the personal information of their donors. All Democrats voted against the dark money proposal. In response to its passage, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“Michigan voters made their priorities clear in November — better roads, better schools, affordable health care, and clean drinking water. No one was asking for even more dark money in politics. Instead of addressing the issues that matter to working families, the legislative majority is fighting to shield their dark money donors from the public. Michigan families deserve a government that is transparent and responsible, but this blatant attempt to subvert democracy and protect special interests will only make our government less accountable to the people.”
