LANSING — Today, Governor Snyder signed into law two Republican proposals to gut citizen-initiated laws to improve economic security for working families. In September, the Legislature voted to enact the ballot proposals to raise the minimum wage increase and guarantee paid sick leave for Michigan’s working families. Senate Bills 1171 and 1175, signed into law today, dramatically reduced the strong wage and sick leave benefits that Michigan voters voiced their support for through the ballot initiative process.
In response to today’s bill signing, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“Today, Michigan’s working men and women were robbed of a pay increase and the right to care for themselves and their loved ones. More than 400,000 Michiganders signed on to these initiatives to demand access to the benefits that all working people deserve, only to have the rug pulled out from under them as the integrity of these initiatives has been all but erased by the legislative majority. In signing these bills, Gov. Snyder chose to abandon our state’s families in the interest of protecting corporate profits, cementing his legacy as someone willing to put the wants of special interests above the needs of the people of our state.”
