LANSING — Today, House Republicans approved House Bill 5526 during a marathon late-night session, establishing a school ranking system to label Michigan schools without proposing resources or solutions to address school improvement. In response to its passage, state Rep. Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) issued the following statement:
“Reviving this arbitrary and failed system will undoubtedly harm the very students, teachers, and school districts its advocates claim it will help. If transparency was truly the goal of this legislation, leadership would have taken up my amendment to require transparency in all Michigan schools, including charter and for-profit institutions. In reality, this scheme only serves to single out failing public schools without providing them any resources to address the underlying issues impacting their students, all while wasting taxpayer dollars to advance the DeVos corporate education agenda.”
