Friends and Neighbors,
Here’s a look at what I’ve been doing at the Capitol and in the district.
Capitol Update
State Rep. Sarah Anthony and I continue our work to end child marriages in Michigan. We introduced our package of bills to end this practice at the beginning of 2019. We were pleased to have bipartisan support as well as the support of more than a dozen organizations that advocate for the well-being of children and women. But despite widespread support, our bills still have not yet received a hearing. Child marriage hurts young people. It harms their health and creates social problems that persist for a lifetime. For these reasons, I won’t give up on working to end child marriage. You can read more information about child marriage in the United States here.
This week, I co-sponsored a package of bills that would revise the health education curriculum in the state of Michigan. The legislation would require health classes to teach sexual assault and dating violence prevention, including the need for affirmative consent. It would also expand HIV/AIDS education, and it would require sex education classes to be inclusive, medically accurate and objective. At a time when serious sexually transmitted infections are on the rise, these improvements cannot come too soon.
Next Thursday, one of my staffers will be jumping into an icy outdoor pool to help raise money for Special Olympics Michigan at the 2020 Michigan Legislative Polar Plunge. The money that is raised will go towards year-round sports training and athletic competition for nearly 23,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities in Michigan. Any donation is greatly appreciated! You can give to our office’s Polar Plunge team here.
District Update
Please join me on Monday from noon to 1 p.m. at the South Lansing Library for coffee and conversation. I will provide a legislative update and answer questions. This event is free and open to the public, so please stop by!
We are still taking submissions for our 67th House District Awards!
If you know of a young person in the district who deserves to be recognized for going the extra mile to make our community a better place, please nominate them using the form here.
If you own or know of a business in the 67th House District that deserves to be recognized for making our community a better place, please nominate them for recognition here.
Tax Season
Tax season has arrived! If you would like a copy of the State of Michigan’s Taxpayer’s Guide for the 2019 Tax Year or the Top 10 Questions to Ask a Tax Preparer, you can find them at government buildings throughout the district. I would also be happy to mail the booklets to you, or you can stop by in person during business hours and pick the publications up.
Sincerely, Kara (517) 373-0587 Facebook: @RepHope Twitter: @KaraHope67
