Legislative Update
My Doula Scholarship Bill Becomes Law:
- HB 5826 (PA 256 of 2024): Last term I introduced this bill, which creates a scholarship program for people seeking doula training in the state of Michigan. I am pleased to announce that this bill was signed into law by Governor Gretchen Whitmer and is now Public Act 256 of 2024. This is a step towards a more comprehensive approach to supporting maternal health in our state.
Pending legislation from last term currently being withheld:
- HB 6058: Legislation that, if signed into, would lower health care costs for thousands of Michigan public employees, including teachers, police officers, firefighters, and state and municipal employees is, unfortunately, being withheld by the current Republican Speaker of the House. I held a press conference to speak about this issue. Watch the recording or read my press release. I look forward to keeping you posted on this important issue.
Save MI Babies: A Bipartisan Bill Package
- HB 4068: I recently introduced my first bill this year to help ensure that infants and newborns can be safely surrendered to fire houses equipped with “Baby Boxes.” This legislation would allow for the surrender of a child through a safe box located at either a fire station or other public safety station. These bills would give new mothers in crisis another option to safely surrender an infant and would save the lives of children who might otherwise be abandoned. I am proud to work across the aisle with two of my Republican colleagues on this legislation to Save MI Babies.
Election Integrity Hearing on Voter Registration
On Tuesday, March 4, I had the opportunity to pose questions in the House Election Integrity Committee hearing regarding House Joint Resolution B, which would amend the Michigan Constitution and would require individuals to provide proof of U.S. citizenship before registering to vote, reregistering, or applying for an absentee ballot. My concern for this resolution is that currently registered voters, like senior citizens, married women and military service members, could become unnecessary financially burdened, which may unjustly prevent them from exercising their constitutional right to vote. Watch my questions in committee here.
Request Tributes, Letters and Certificates
Do you know any individual, organization, or group in the community celebrating a special occasion, retirement, or event and would appreciate a legislative tribute to celebrate their achievement or contribution? My office provides legislative tributes, letters, and certificates on a wide range of recognitions. Please email MaiXiong@house.mi.gov to make a request. It would be an honor for me to recognize the achievements and milestones in our community — no matter big or small!
