Dear Neighbor,
Before we turn the calendar page on Women’s History Month, I wanted to take a moment to share a couple of women’s history tidbits related to Michigan’s Legislature.
- Cora Reynolds Anderson was the first woman elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1925. She was also the first Native American woman elected to any state legislature in the U.S.
- In 2019, Michigan made history when Bridget Mary McCormack was appointed Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. At the time, Gretchen Whitmer served as governor, Dana Nessel as attorney general and Jocelyn Benson as secretary of state, marking the first time these positions were all held by women simultaneously.
- In 2022, the Michigan Senate made history by electing Sen. Winnie Brinks as its first female senate majority leader.
These milestones highlight the significant progress women have made in Michigan’s legislature, shaping the state’s future and paving the way for future generations of female leaders. I’m eager to continue the progress ahead.
For all other questions, as always, don’t hesitate to reach out to my office by phone at (517) 373-0476 or email at CAGlanville@house.mi.gov. Follow me on social media for the most up-to-date information.
