Dear Neighbor,
April marks the start of Spring and warmer weather on the way. I hope you can enjoy the warmer weather by spending some time outside, using our local parks, watching some Tigers baseball, and getting some early yard work done. April also marks the start of and time to reflect on Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Arab American Heritage Month.
As you may know, I now represent House District 14, which includes Center Line, Hazel Park, Madison Heights, and part of Warren. I look forward to earning the trust of my new constituents and working my hardest to serve you. My new district map is below to help orient ourselves to House District 14.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month
This can be a heavy topic and one that you may be asking “What can I do?” Below are some ways to reflect and a few actionable items from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center that we can do in our daily lives to make progress.
- Improve skills around asking for consent and respecting the response, challenge jokes that demean others, and maintain and model healthy relationships.
- Encourage children to respect others’ boundaries and bodies, challenge unfair gender stereotypes, and treat others with respect.
- Improve policies and practices within faith communities, community organizations, workplaces, and schools to ensure everyone is treated fairly. Screen staff and volunteers and train them frequently on healthy behavior and boundaries.

Arab American Heritage Month
Michigan is home to one of the largest concentrations of Arabs in the country. According to 2020 census data, Michigan is home to around 310,087 residents with Middle Eastern or North African Ancestry, about 3.1% of Michigan’s population. Join me in celebrating Arab American Heritage Month by visiting the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn (13624 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48126), which has free admission for the entire month of April! The Arab American National Museum is one of seven Michigan-based affiliates of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. and is accredited by the American Alliance for Museums. Stop in during April to learn more about Arab American influence and culture in our communities.

I am hosting a community conversation on Monday, April 21, from 6-7 p.m. at the Madison Heights Library, 240 W. 13 Mile Road in Madison Heights. Join me to receive an update on what is going on in Lansing and to ask questions and address concerns the community may have. I hope to see you there!
