April Teacher of the Month Winner- Jeff Szekely
Congratulations to our April Teacher of the Month winner, Jeff Szekely, who is a high school band teacher at Charlotte High School.

I found the nomination to be so noteworthy, that I wanted to share a portion of it with you: “I believe that Jeff should be teacher of the month because he’s gone above and beyond numerous times. He started at our high school in difficult times in 2020, trying to fill the shoes of the amazing director before him. He’s overfilled those shoes now. He restarted the jazz band, even making it popular enough for it to now be a class. He’s taken the jazz band to multiple festivals helping them get straight 1’s. He’s driven every musician in his band to play their absolute best, this shows the numerous perfect scores at solo and ensemble through his time here, and straight ones in the symphony band and concert band for district and state band festivals. He’s an amazing director, after doing all this he still finds time in his day to make connections with his students. He inspires them to be more than themselves, and to share the love and passion of music with others. He’s genuinely the most inspiring teacher I’ve ever had. He’s helped me through some of my toughest times, and he’s done that for many others. He’s inspired me to become a music educator myself.”

Thank you for all that you do for the Charlotte community, Jeff!

Spoke at Groundbreaking Ceremony for Eaton Rapids Teen Space
State Sen. Sarah Anthony and I were invited to speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Eaton Rapids Teen Space building. As the chairs of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees last term, we worked together to secure $3 million in the state budget for this new center so that Eaton Rapids youth can have a space to go during the after school hours to socialize, study, play games, eat food and participate in various programming opportunities.

2025 Rosenthal Award Winner — Tabitha Garza
Tabitha has been an intern in my office for a year and a half. I first met her when I attended Waverly’s robotics team. Throughout her internship, Tabitha has shown leadership, initiative and support to everyone in the office. Mostly, she brings positivity and happiness everywhere she goes. She recently received the Daniel Rosenthal Legislative Intern Award which is a great achievement. I could not be more grateful for her support. Congratulations, Tabitha!

General Update:
I’d like to share an opportunity in our community to attend the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Girls State Program or the American Legion Michigan Boys State Program, both taking place in June.

2025 Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program
The 2025 Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program will be held on the Michigan State University Lansing Campus from June 22 to June 28. The program is available to high school juniors.

Participants, also known as “delegates” or “citizens,” spend a week on MSU’s campus immersed in programming that walks them through the operations of local, county and state governments. Through this hands-on simulation, delegates run for office, elect officials and solve fictional problems through simulated government action. There are opportunities to take the bar exam and join the Girl’s State Supreme Court, become a member of the press association and learn to write informative articles, or even join a lobbying group to meet with the legislators they elect.

2025 Michigan American Legion Auxiliary Boys State Program

American Legion’s Boys State Program is a week-long program at Grand Valley State University that will educate young men about the internal workings of our government. This is achieved by providing a stage for them to learn, by allowing them to create the simulated 51st state in the nation. This state includes all forms of government at the city, county and state level. Participants can run to become a deputy sheriff of a county or be elected governor.

Legislative Update:

Introduced May is Treatment Court Awareness Month Resolution
This week, the Michigan House of Representatives adopted my resolution, House Resolution 80, to declare May 2025 as Treatment Court Month in the State of Michigan.

It has been an honor to introduce this resolution for the last couple of years to recognize and uplift the efforts of drug treatment courts and leaders like Hon. Harvey Hoffman. Judge Hoffman worked diligently to establish Michigan’s second drug treatment court in Eaton County. Treatment courts are designed to combine accountability with evidence-based treatment and recovery services for those impacted by substance use and mental health disorders.

I am proud to support the efforts to help restore the lives of countless individuals and families in our community. The tagline for National Treatment Court Month is “when one person rises, we all rise.” Truly, when one person, one family and one community rises, Michigan rises
