Dear Neighbor,
Hello and Happy Spring!
As the weather warms up, I’m excited to share another monthly update with you. I’ve heard from many of you who want to stay more informed about the legislation being voted on in the Michigan House, and I appreciate your engagement. Starting this month, we’ll continue to provide updates on key bills and decisions so you can stay in the loop.
I’m also thrilled to announce a new way we’ll be celebrating the incredible people who make our community special. We’re launching a Teacher of the Month and Business of the Month recognition program. If you know an outstanding educator or business in our community, please take a moment to nominate them using our new digital applications here and here.
Thank you for staying connected!

April Recap
Town Hall Roundup
We had more than 120 people join us at Ottawa Hills High School for my first town hall event of the year! I was joined by elected officials at the federal and city level as we worked to address constituents’ concerns about the future — housing, costs of living and concerns about what is going on at the federal level. Thank you to each and every person who joined us! Together we will continue to address and push back on the issues that concern us the most.
To the Point
I was back for another edition of To the Point. You can find the full show on woodtv.com. I joined Rick Albin to talk about budget season and how we can get work done in Lansing this year.
Build Baby Build
I welcomed the Governor to our community to learn more about Mel Trotter’s Hope Village project this month. These new builds — led by Mel Trotter Ministries and Next Step of West Michigan — will be affordable housing for neighbors who have experienced homelessness. This will be Grand Rapids’ first tiny home community, and a powerful example of what’s possible when we focus on dignity and innovation in housing.
Black Legislative Leaders Network Policy Summit
The Black Legislative Leaders Network Policy Summit was a great opportunity to meet with state legislators from across the country as we discussed the moment we are in and how we work together to defend democracy. I look forward to continuing to work together on model legislation and support as we each fight to protect our states and communities.
Legislative Update
In response to constituent requests each month my office will highlight legislation that passed out of the Michigan House of Representatives. Here is a quick snapshot for the month of April:
Bills I voted in support of:
- House Bill 4029 which protects Michigan Fishers from unexpected, midseason rules changes.
- House Bill 4245 which updates Cottage Food Law to seek parity for Michigan’s honey and maple syrup producers.
Bills I voted in opposition to:
- HJR B is a joint resolution to amend the Michigan Constitution that would impose new, onerous barriers to voting, such as requiring Michiganders to provide documentary proof of citizenship, like a birth certificate or a passport, when registering to vote and government-issued photo ID when casting a ballot.
- House Bills 4338 and 4229 attack local control by banning municipalities from enforcing or enacting local ordinances that limit or prohibit law enforcement from cooperating with the feds on an individual’s immigration status.
This is a short recap of April votes, for a full look at what bills the legislature is hearing and passing you can go to the public record and follow along in the journals here.
