Dear Neighbor,

I hope you had a happy Memorial Day weekend! This month, I was proud to host our very first successful Veterans Resource Fair in our community. Nearly 100 veterans attended our event and were connected to valuable resources.

I remain committed to ensuring that your voice is represented in Lansing. Whether it’s lowering costs for your family or providing resources for our veterans and students — I am honored to work each day on your behalf.

Respectfully,

State Representative
House District 13

I’m proud to have recently introduced new legislation, including:

HB 4370: “Students Tax Credit Relief”

The “Students Tax Credit Relief” legislation is a bipartisan bill that helps tackle the high cost of college. Currently, textbooks purchased for K–12 students are exempt from Michigan’s sales tax. Yet, that same relief is not extended to college students — many of whom are already facing significant financial challenges. This bill would correct that gap in our tax code. It would allow students who receive a federal Pell Grant and attend an eligible institution in Michigan — including vocational schools, community colleges and universities — to claim an income tax credit equal to the sales and use tax they pay on required classroom textbooks.

HB 4371: “Safe Youth Sports Act”

The “Safe Youth Sports Act” is a bipartisan bill that takes a meaningful step toward protecting our children’s safety when participating in sports. HB 4371 provides an opportunity for youth sports programs to meet statewide safety standards, to provide parents peace of mind and to ensure our kid’s safety when participating in sports. These safety standards include establishing an emergency action plan and severe weather policy, requiring coaches to undergo CPR, AED and concussion training and conducting annual background checks on adults serving in a designated role. What student athletes and parents need are leaders that have their backs, and a state that believes in the power of youth sports.

HB 4463: “Security, Accountability, and Noninterference in our Elections (SANE) Plan”

My bill, HB 4463, is part of a 3-bill package, known as the “SANE Plan” that would make it easier to vote, and harder to cheat — not just for voters, but for politicians as well.

The SANE Plan includes several wide-ranging bills that make it easier to vote but harder to cheat in our elections. The bills that were announced today range from ensuring that all members of the legislature actually reside in the districts that they represent to requiring the Department of State to verify that for all new voter registrations, the department has no records on file showing that the individual registering is a non-citizen and would provide more flexibility in cleaning up the voter rolls and removing outdated voter registrations.
