Road Work Alert: M-99 Between Holt Highway and Edgewood Boulevard
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin rebuilding M-99 between Holt Highway and Edgewood Boulevard in Eaton and Ingham counties.
This work is part of a $15 million investment to rebuild M-99 from Holt Road to Edgewood Boulevard that will address pavement conditions, drainage and pedestrian improvements. Based on economic modeling, the investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 143 jobs.
The work was scheduled to begin on Monday, April 7, and is expected to end on Friday, Oct. 31.
Michigan FFA Association Charlotte Chapter Banquet
I was invited to join the Michigan FFA Association Charlotte Chapter’s banquet. I’ve enjoyed working with our district and the entire FFA for our state. They recognized my work by awarding me the honorary degree. Agriculture is Michigan’s second largest industry — FFA works to secure the next generation. Thank you for the honor!
Invited Grand Ledge Pompon JV and Varsity State Champions to Capitol
I welcomed the athletes, coaches and parents of the Grand Ledge Pompon JV and varsity teams to the Michigan State Capitol. The varsity team won their second consecutive state championship this year, and the JV team also won a state championship this year for the first time in school’s history!
Congratulations again to the team and to the entire Grand Ledge community for these amazing accomplishments! Go Comets!
Spoke at Lansing Community College 80th Fire Academy Graduation
I spoke at Lansing Community College’s 80th Fire Academy graduation ceremony. It was a special event honoring the accomplishments of seven new firefighters.
When I was first elected to office, I was invited to go through fire training at Lansing Community College’s West Campus. Through that experience, I gained an even deeper respect for those who keep us safe while risking their own lives. It has been an honor to work on behalf of our firefighters, police officers and other first responders at the Capitol to ensure they have the resources and support they need to protect and serve our communities every day.
Congratulations again to all of the graduates and to their families and loved ones on reaching this milestone!

Testifying on House Bills 4394–4395 in the House Regulatory Reform Committee
Two weeks ago, two of my constituents, Missy and Savannah Smith, joined me in Lansing for testimony on a bill package they have been helping my office work on to support our veterans.
House Bills 4394-4395 would create a temporary, one-year permit within the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs for any interested and licensed barber and cosmetologist to apply for to be able to offer free haircuts to veterans at veteran service organizations, such as at American Legions and VFWs.
Last week, the bill package was passed unanimously out of the House Regulatory Reform Committee!
Thank you, Missy and Savannah, for working with my office on this issue and for highlighting the need for this important legislation.
Committees:
- Health Policy Committee met last week to vote on House Bills 4037–4038 to implement a Health Data Utility to modernize the state’s public health data collection and improve the medical record sharing among health care providers. We also heard testimony on a bill to expand the State Recipient Rights Advisory Committee, a bill to remove questions related to mental health conditions and impairment from licensure applications, and a bill that specifies that a patient’s rights, while receiving mental health treatments, includes the right to end voluntary mental health treatment.
- Rules Committee met last week to consider bills to change the requirements and penalties for an employer’s report of a death or injury on a family farm. We also considered a bill to enter Michigan into the Nurse Licensure Compact as well as a bill to increase the entitled uniform pricing discount for SDD licensees and on-premises licensees.
Session:
Last week in session, the House took up:
- House Bill 4287: A bill to deduct from taxable income certain broadband expansion grants.
- House Bills 4343–4344: HB 4343 would amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to provide that seasonal reductions in certain maximum axle weights and gross vehicle weight maximums under the code do not apply to vehicles traveling to assist with or directly assisting with a disaster or emergency during a state of disaster or state of emergency declared under the Emergency Management Act. HB 4344 would amend the Motor Carrier Safety Act to provide that 49 CFR 395, which prescribes maximum hours of service for drivers of certain commercial motor vehicles, does not apply to a vehicle traveling to assist with or directly assisting with a disaster or emergency declared under the Emergency Management Act.
- House Bill 4203: A bill to amend the Michigan Vehicle Code to exempt a wrecker from seasonal reductions in certain maximum axle weights and gross vehicle weight maximums under the code. These reductions, often called “frost laws,” are made in the spring to protect road surfaces when the roadbeds beneath them variably soften as they thaw.
