Dear Neighbor,

Our team has been staying busy this summer knocking doors in the community and having conversations about what you’d like to see happen in Michigan. Below are some of the things we’ve been up to since our in-district work period began in July.

Governor Whitmer Signed the 2023-24 State Budget

Before the summer in-district work period, my colleagues and I passed the 2023-24 budget that greatly invests in the people of Michigan. This “Make it in Michigan” budget was signed by Gov. Whitmer on July 31. The budget includes funding for more affordable housing, strengthens our state’s “rainy day” fund, reinvests in our K-12 schools and colleges, and reinvests in public health and safety.

I was proud to advocate for our district during the budget process and secured the following funding for our communities in House District 31:

  • $10 million for the replacement of the Denton Road bridge causeway in Van Buren Township.
  • $3.6 million for the Milan wastewater treatment facility.
  • $1.6 million for a new CTE Center for Romulus Community Schools.
  • $1.8 million for the expansion of the Iron Belle Trail.

Going PRO Talent Fund Awards Nearly $450,000 to Support Belleville, Romulus Workers and Businesses

The Going PRO Talent Fund has awarded nearly $450,000 to three local businesses in our area. This funding will go toward helping more than 230 local workers receive the training they need to gain and retain high-skill, high-wage careers. Piston Automotive LLC in Van Buren Township, Ginosko Modular in Romulus and Neapco in Belleville were each recipients of this grant. This is a huge win for our local manufacturing sector!

We Toured the Better Made Snack Foods Plant in Detroit

In my role as chair of the House Agriculture Committee, I visited the Better Made Snack Foods plant in Detroit with my committee colleague, Republican state Rep. Jerry Neyer. This was a fun and educational experience as we were able to see how potato chips are made, from potatoes off the truck to the bag of chips that fill our grocery shelves. Thank you to the Michigan Potato Industry Commission for setting up this tour!
