Dear Neighbor,

Happy Spring! It is my privilege to serve as your state representative. Keeping my constituents informed as to what I am working on in Lansing is of the utmost importance to me. I am pleased to provide you with some information that I hope you will find helpful, including in-district updates, as well as news from your state government.

March is Reading Month

tdey

“March is Reading Month” has been off to a fast start in District 83! March gives us the chance to uplift the importance of reading and literacy for our students, and it’s fun for adults to participate by picking up a new book! Thank you to Burton Elementary, Cesar E. Chavez Elementary School, Godfrey Elementary and Grandview Elementary for letting me come read stories, answer questions, and have some fun with you all!

Saving Lives with Access to AEDs

fth

State Rep. Tyrone Carter and I recently introduced House Bills 5527 and 5528, aimed at preventing deaths due to sudden cardiac arrest in schools. The bill package would improve school safety by requiring schools to develop cardiac emergency response plans and offer training and access to automated external defibrillators (AEDs), which are used to help anyone experiencing a cardiac emergency. The House Regulatory Reform Committee passed the legislation out of committee unanimously, and I am pleased to announce that it has passed the House. Next, the legislation will be considered in the Senate, and I look forward to continuing to advocate for its passage.

No-Cost Lunches for Public School Students

school

Michigan public school students are now receiving free breakfast and lunch. For many families in our district, that means they are saving $850 each year per child! This policy erases a painful stigma that often comes with free school meals. For hundreds of thousands of children, free school breakfast and lunch ensures that they have the nutrition they need to learn, be healthy, and be successful. These meals mean fewer behavioral problems and higher educational attainment while eliminating stress and saving money for parents.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to my office if I can be of further assistance. You can reach me at: JohnFitzgerald@house.mi.gov or at (517) 373-3085.

It is my honor to serve you.

Respectfully,

John Fitzgerald
