LANSING, Mich., Nov. 4, 2021 —  The Michigan House of Representatives passed House Bill 5097, a bill banning the teaching of racial injustice in public schools. State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement condemning the passage of the legislation:

“Instead of focusing on the issues that affect our state, some in this chamber want to focus on a problem that doesn’t exist. As a former school board administrator, I know so-called critical race theory is not taught in our public school system, but this legislation would condemn and fire teachers for merely doing their jobs. All history is important, including the history of Black and brown Americans. We must be transparent about the past and present and approach the issue of race in this country in a more holistic way for our children to understand and create real progress. Our students deserve that. As legislators, it’s time to stop creating fake problems and get back to delivering real solutions.”
