LANSING — Tonight, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer delivered her first State of the State address, outlining her vision for the state and calling for bipartisan collaboration to address the issues facing Michigan’s working families. In response, state Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit), who also had the honor of escorting Michigan’s state senators into the joint session, issued the following statement:

“Each day, I am reminded of the tremendous amount of work that needs to be done to improve the lives of the people of Detroit. From tackling discriminatory practices in auto insurance to protecting against environmental contamination, I am proud to stand with Gov. Whitmer in providing much-needed relief to our communities. Working with community partners like my guest, Mrs. Wilson, is critical to bringing forgotten voices back to the decision-making table.”

Rep. Carter was joined by Western Wayne County NAACP President Gina Wilson-Steward for the address. Under Mrs. Wilson’s leadership, this chapter of the NAACP focuses on getting young people involved in the political process and building partnerships with local organizations.
