LANSING, Mich., Jan. 30, 2025 — Following a federal judge’s temporary block of President Trump’s freeze on federal grants and aid, the Trump administration formally rescinded the memo ordering the freeze yesterday. While this may prevent a significant disruption in programs that tens of millions of Americans rely on, the initial memo underscores the ongoing threat to vital benefits programs. The White House’s initial federal freeze also speaks to the constant chaos and confusion Republicans are causing all over the country, including right here in Michigan. After the order was rescinded, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:

“I’ve been hearing from neighbors and constituents since the federal freeze took place who are deeply concerned about the future of their SNAP benefits, Section 8 housing assistance, Meals on Wheels and other essential support systems. Rightfully, the courts intervened which, coupled with public outcry, seemingly pressured President Trump to stand down.

“However, we cannot ignore the broader implications of this administration’s agenda. The repeated targeting of social safety net programs makes it clear that they are at risk of severe cuts — or elimination altogether.

“As your representative, I will continue to fight to protect these programs and ensure that no family is left without the support they need to thrive. I also encourage everyone to stay informed and engaged as this situation develops. We must stand together to safeguard the resources that build up families and communities.”
