LANSING, Mich., Aug. 2, 2024 — This week, Donald Trump attended an interview at a conference of Black journalists. The interview quickly became contentious with Trump criticizing moderators, making racist comments about Vice President Kamala Harris and reinforcing his commitment to pardon defendants of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. Following the interview, state Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) issued the following statement:

“I am deeply troubled by the remarks made by former President Trump during his recent interview. His statements not only disrespected Vice President Harris but also failed to acknowledge diversity. It is important to our democracy that we value unity, inclusivity and have respect for all individuals, regardless of their background or political affiliation. The comments made by Trump are contrary to the values we uphold throughout the nation. We must stand together, rejecting divisive rhetoric and continuing to advocate for policy and officials that are committed to putting all people first.”
