Event offers support to southwest Detroit residents

DETROIT, Mich., Feb. 26, 2025 — State Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit) is proud to partner with the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program to host a free food and household supply giveaway today, to help support residents facing hardship. The event will take place at LA SED Senior and Youth Center, 7150 Vernor Hwy. in Detroit, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., while supplies last.

“Our community is strongest when we come together to support one another,” Carter said. “Many of our neighbors are facing difficult times, whether from financial hardship or unexpected crises like the recent water main break. I am proud to host this event with the AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program to provide much-needed relief and make sure families have access to fresh food, essential supplies and the support of a caring community. No one should have to struggle alone — we are in this together.”

This event comes at a critical time for many families, especially those impacted by the recent water main break in Southwest Detroit, which left many homes flooded and residents struggling to recover. While the giveaway is open to all who need assistance, special attention will be given to those dealing with the aftermath of the flooding.

The giveaway will include:

  • Fresh produce
  • Canned goods
  • Pet supplies
  • Essential household cleaning items

These resources are intended to assist residents as they recover from the flooding and begin to rebuild their lives. For more information, contact Iselda Esquivel at (313) 577-1164 or ag5943@wayne.edu.
