Democratic lawmaker will host Markkanen for bipartisan initiative
PONTIAC, Mich., April 25, 2025 — State Rep. Brenda Carter (D-Pontiac) is proud to announce that she will host state Rep. Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock) this May as part of the Michigan Legislative Exchange (MILE) Project. MILE is a bipartisan initiative to strengthen understanding and cooperation between lawmakers representing different regions and perspectives across Michigan.
The program was unveiled Wednesday during the Michigan Political Leadership Program’s Annual Dinner and is inspired by the phrase “walk a mile in his shoes,” drawing on the legacy of Michigan suffragist Mary Lathrap, who urged compassion and understanding in public service.
“In these divisive times, it’s more important than ever that we find common ground. By walking a mile in each other’s districts, we gain not only new insights, but also renewed purpose,” Carter said. “I’m honored to welcome Rep. Markkanen to House District 53, where he’ll meet with community leaders, tour our neighborhoods and see firsthand the innovation and resilience that define Southeast Michigan.”
The visit is an opportunity for both legislators to engage in open dialogue about the unique challenges and opportunities facing their communities, with the goal of fostering collaboration and mutual respect. Carter’s trip to Markkanen’s District in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is anticipated for early summer.
“Rep. Brenda Carter is a wonderful person who cares about her community and the state of Michigan. I look forward to meeting the people that sent her to Lansing to advocate on their behalf. It will be my privilege to host her in the Western Upper Peninsula,” said state Rep. Greg Markkanen (R-Hancock)
