LANSING — State Rep. John Cherry (D-Flint Township) was named an assistant House Democratic whip today for the 2019-2020 legislative term. Cherry was also recently appointed to the Democratic policy team to build the caucus’ agenda for the upcoming term. Cherry is serving his first term representing the 49th House District.
“I am grateful for the trust placed in me by my Democratic colleagues to serve the people of Michigan in this capacity,” Cherry said. “As Gov. Whitmer said in her inaugural address, we are a state that prides itself on building bridges, and I look forward to using this new role to build bridges of support in the Legislature. Michiganders want solutions to the problems we face, like access to clean water, better roads and vibrant communities. I’m ready to get to work.”
As assistant Democratic whip, Cherry will be working with Democratic Whip Darrin Camilleri (D-Brownstown Township) to build support for House Democrats’ legislative priorities during the 2019-20 session. Before serving in the Legislature, Cherry worked for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources before starting a small business in the district with his wife, Teresa. Cherry previously served as vice chair of the Flint Charter Commission. Cherry earned both his bachelor’s degree in natural resources and environment and his master’s of public policy from the University of Michigan.
