LANSING — Last night, the House gave final approval to state Rep. John Chirkun’s (D-Roseville) House Bill 5940 as well as the two other bills in a package that will make much-needed changes to Michigan’s Fireworks Safety Act. The bills will give more regulative control to local governments concerning the sale and use of fireworks in their communities. In response to the passage, Rep. Chirkun issued the following statement:

“Over the years, residents in my community have brought forward their concerns regarding the sale and use of fireworks in our state, and these bills will go a long way toward addressing those problems. Although fireworks are part of many different celebrations and traditions, we need rules in place to ensure their use is not negatively affecting other people’s quality of life. I would like to thank my colleague, Rep. Jim Lilly, for working with me on this package, and I hope that Gov. Snyder quickly signs these into law.”
