LANSING, Mich., June 28, 2023 — The Michigan House of Representatives passed the state’s fiscal 2023-24 budget today. It includes the largest investment in education in Michigan’s history, including free breakfast and lunch for every public school student and affordable pre-K for all, as well as substantial investments in workforce recruitment and retention, water infrastructure and public safety. The Democratic majority delivered a timely and responsible budget that ensures federal funds set to go back to D.C. stay in Michigan. State Rep. Betsy Coffia (D-Traverse City) issued the following statement applauding the budget:
“This budget delivers for Northern Michigan in a way that decades of previous budgets have not. It includes long-sought, much-needed funding to help rural school districts handle increased transportation costs, and it fully funds the special education foundation allowance for the first time ever. We funded more affordable housing and critical environmental protections and child care tuition assistance. We’re supporting small businesses and first responders to improve the quality of life in our communities. This is a budget I’m proud to support.”
