House Republicans’ hastily passed budget puts critical programs at risk

LANSING, Mich., Aug. 28, 2025 — This week, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill, House Bill 4706. Following D.C. Republicans’ lead, the House Republican budget would cut necessary programs and services that Michiganders rely on, from Medicaid to food assistance. After voting no, state Rep. Jennifer Conlin (D-Ann Arbor Charter Twp.) released the following statement:

“My heart aches for Michigan families, students and teachers. This budget proposal does not reflect Michigan’s priorities. It cuts SNAP benefits that provide food assistance from Michigan farmers and hurts seniors’ ability to age in their homes. And then….after promising a budget for months, House Republicans gave us just under one hour to review their 800-page budget before demanding a vote on Tuesday. That is not transparency. Their delay has already forced schools across our state to halt universal meals, leaving children without the nutrition and support they deserve. Sadly, House Republicans have made their priorities clear — they do not stand with the kids, families and people of Michigan. I look forward to continuing negotiations with our partners in the Senate and Governor’s office to deliver a better budget for all Michiganders in the coming weeks.”
