LANSING – State Representative George T. Darany (D-Dearborn) today thanked two local companies for investing in Dearborn and committing to creating up to 276 local jobs. Health Business Solutions (HBS) and Severstal Dearborn Inc. will use state incentives to expand their local operations and hire more workers.
“I want to thank and applaud HBS and Severstal for investing in Dearborn and committing to our world-class workforce,” Darany said. “Nothing is more important than creating local jobs and increasing economic development in our community, and these major projects prove that we are making progress. We are showing businesses that we’ll work with them to make it beneficial to locate in Michigan and expand here. I’m proud to welcome HBS to Dearborn and to congratulate Severstal on its expansion.”
Health Business Solutions, a full-service consulting firm that supports the health care industry in Dearborn, will use a Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) incentive to establish its first facility in Michigan. The company plans to invest $2.6 million to purchase and renovate an underutilized building. The project will create up to 206 direct new jobs, including 61 in the first year. HBS will train and certify employees to work with health care providers to reduce denied claims.
Severstal will use a state brownfield tax credit and state and local tax capture to support the construction of a high-speed continuous annealing line capable of producing advanced, high-strength steel at the company’s facility in Dearborn. The project includes demolition, removal of debris, re-routing utility lines and asbestos removal. It is expected to generate $280 million in new private investment and create up to 70 full-time jobs. To date, Severstal has invested more than $1.3 billion in equipment and improvements to its Dearborn facility.
Companies only receive the MEGA credits if the jobs they have promised are created.
“State incentives can be a useful part of our economic toolbox, as long they actually produce jobs for Michigan workers” Darany said. “Without being able to offer these particular incentives as part of our partnership with these local employers, our community would have likely lost them to other states. This would have hurt our workers and our local economy. I’ll continue to work to make Michigan more business-friendly while using our residents’ hard-earned taxpayer dollars efficiently and effectively.”
