LANSING – State Representative George T. Darany (Dearborn) today extended his well wishes to Muslims in the Dearborn area and across the state who will be observing the holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims engage in a tradition of reflection, fasting and prayer.
“Ramadan is a celebration of the Islamic faith and I wish our many Muslim friends and neighbors in Michigan and worldwide, a joyous and meaningful Ramadan,” Darany said. “Here in Dearborn, we have a strong Muslim community and I offer my warmest wishes as they embark on a month-long journey of prayer, family, reflection, restraint, charity and understanding.”
According to Islamic faith, Ramadan is the month that the Muslim holy book, the Koran, was revealed to Prophet Muhammad. Beginning in August, Muslims are encouraged to refrain from eating and drinking, among other activities, during the daylight hours. They typically end their fast at sunset with meals and prayer. The evening is also a time to spend with family.
Earlier this year, Representative Darany introduced House Resolution 50, which was unanimously adopted by the Michigan House of Representatives, commemorating the observance of the holy month of Ramadan.
“On behalf of the Michigan House of Representatives, it is an honor and privilege to recognize those individuals and families observing Ramadan during this time of prayer and reflection,” Darany said.
