LANSING, Mich., July 7, 2022 — Yesterday, the Republican leadership of both the House and the Senate filed at 11:40 p.m. to appeal, on behalf of the whole Legislature, the Court of Claims injunction currently preventing the enforcement of the states 1931 abortion ban. In response, House Democratic Leader Donna Lasinski (D-Scio Township) issued the following statement:
“Republican leadership has once more taken a radical maneuver in the middle of the night to defend one of the nation’s most extreme abortion bans on behalf of the entire Legislature without a vote before the House or even a moment of consideration by the chamber. Obviously, they do not speak for the House Democrats — they know this, and we have made clear in the courts that we oppose them here. Abortion remains legal in the state of Michigan only because of this court injunction. Republicans are begging for this extremist abortion ban, with no exceptions for rape, incest or adolescent victimhood, because their policy all along has been ’31 or Bust. It is extremely out of touch with the demands, needs and fundamental rights of the people of our state, and we will continue to fight like hell for the rights of Michiganders the Republicans would devastate on their march to the Michigan of 100 years ago.”
