LANSING, Mich., Sept. 5, 2024 — State Rep. Emily Dievendorf (D-Lansing) will present a new automated external defibrillator (AED) to Sexton High School at halftime during the school’s football game against Lansing Catholic on Friday. Recently signed legislation ensures schools maintain AEDs and make them accessible within one to three minutes during a cardiac emergency. In celebration of the new law, the NFL donated 50 AEDs for Michigan legislators to distribute to schools in their districts. Dievendorf issued the following statement on presenting the AED:
“Increasing access to AEDs will undoubtedly make Michigan high schools a safer place for students, faculty, staff and community members. Preparedness is key in treating cardiac emergencies, and having an AED in the building will greatly reduce the time it takes to begin lifesaving treatment. I am grateful that Sexton High School is now better equipped to take action, should a cardiac emergency occur.”
“I want to thank state Rep. Emily Dievendorf for helping to ensure that Sexton High School has access to an AED,” Sexton High School Principal Dan Boggan said. “This is about more than just providing equipment — it’s about saving lives. I’m proud to support this important initiative, which gives our students, staff and community a tool they need for safety and peace of mind. Every second matters in an emergency, and with this AED, we’re empowering our school to act quickly and decisively.”
