103rd Legislature Swearing In

(State Rep. Carter, wife Lisa Carter, brother-in-law Keith Morrow and Michigan Supreme Court Justice Kyra Harris Bolden.)

I’m honored to have taken the oath of office on Jan. 9, 2025 as we began the 103rd legislative session. I’m ready to continue working alongside my colleagues, advocating for residents of Detroit, Ecorse and River Rouge.

Redistricting

As you may know, a federal court ordered the Michigan Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw seven House districts in metro Detroit, including House District 1. In March of 2024 the new maps were approved, and ultimately 15 House Districts were redrawn. The Bureau of Elections updated the state voter files to reflect the new district lines for 2024 election cycle. The new districts are now in place, please see House District 1 pictured below:

Martin Luther King Jr Day

On Monday Jan. 20, we honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on his Day! Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King and improve their communities. We remain committed to the ideals of justice, equality and unity that he championed. As we reflect on his powerful words, let’s continue to work together to build a Michigan that truly embraces diversity and fosters inclusion.

I was honored to spend my Day of Service with AmeriCorps handing out resources, food distribution, winter weather supplies and much more.

Winter Weather

Warming Centers

Warming centers opened in early November, and there are an increased number of emergency shelter beds for the unhoused during the cold weather months. The warming centers will provide overnight shelter, two meals, showers, sleeping accommodations and housing assistance services to residents experiencing homelessness.

The City of Detroit utilizes a coordinated entry process to access shelters and warming centers. Those seeking shelter or warming center placements can access the Coordinated Assessment Model (CAM) by calling the City of Detroit’s Housing Services Helpline at (866) 313-2520, Tue.–Fri., 8 a.m.- 6 p.m.

Veterans seeking shelter should call (866) 313-2520 Tue.–Fri., 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Winter Safety Resources

Cold and snowy weather is here! Stay prepared by checking on neighbors, charging your phone, locating flashlights and batteries and by following local officials for updates. Please see the resource links below for important resources!

Driving Safe

In July, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed a new measure making it illegal for drivers to be within 200 feet of a snowplow (13 car lengths) or within 20 feet of a snowplow stopped at an intersection – violators can be fined up to $100.

An online tool from the Michigan Department of Transportation called Mi Drive can show you many of the roads in Michigan that have been recently plowed, in addition to a wealth of other road safety information. Access Mi Drive at Michigan.gov/Drive.

Snow Operations in Detroit: Who Does What?

The city of Detroit maintains 673 miles of major mile roads and city contractors will clear 1,884 miles of residential streets. When snow is 6 inches or higher in residential areas, crews will plow 16-foot paths (not curb to curb), by district. Please be aware cars must be removed from snow emergency routes or they may be towed.

Wayne County clears freeways and county roads, such as:

  • Outer Dr.
  • Greenfield
  • Chandler Park Dr.
  • Westside portions of Fenkell
  • McNichols
  • Seven Mile

Michigan Department of Transportation clears major arteries including:

  • Gratiot
  • Woodward
  • Grand River
  • Michigan
  • Fort
  • Eight Mile, etc.

And remember!  It is now illegal to manually use a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while operating a vehicle on Michigan roads. Under the law, a driver cannot hold or support a phone or other device. Holding or manually using a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while operating a vehicle is a primary offense — which means an officer can stop and ticket drivers for this violation.

Please be cautious and stay safe driving this winter!
