LANSING, Mich., July 7, 2025 — July 1 is the deadline for the legislature to pass and present a budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year to the governor. Since gaining a majority, House Republicans have delayed the budget process, refusing to come to the negotiation table in good-faith. After the deadline, state Rep. Kimberly Edwards (D-Eastpointe) issued the following statement:

“House Republicans had ample time to do their job, and they  failed to do it. Instead of passing a budget that keeps our state running, they stalled the process. Families need functioning schools, safe roads and reliable public services. That’s not political — it’s basic. Missing the budget deadline isn’t just bad leadership, it’s a failure of responsibility, and the people of our state deserve better.”
