Dear Neighbor,

Hi, I’m Jason. Over the last 2 years, I’ve had the privilege to serve as your state representative for Washtenaw, Wayne and Oakland Counties. As we close out this legislative term and enter 2025, I’m proud to reflect on the remarkable progress we’ve made for Michiganders. Together, we’ve focused on putting people first, championing bold policies and securing meaningful investments that uplift families, strengthen communities and lay the groundwork for a brighter future.

With your support and input, we’ve tackled issues that matter most to you — from ensuring our kids can thrive in safe and supportive schools to expanding access to affordable housing, healthcare and clean energy solutions.

Major Wins for Our Communities

This term, we delivered transformative legislation that makes a real difference in the lives of Michigan families and communities.

  • Gun Safety Reforms: Enacted universal background checks and red flag laws, common-sense measures designed to reduce gun violence and protect families in every corner of our state.

  • Housing Protection: The Legislature passed a bill I sponsored that would end discrimination based on source of income, making housing more accessible for families relying on non-traditional income sources. Additionally, we increased funding for affordable housing programs, addressing one of our state’s most urgent needs.

  • Reproductive Freedom: Protected individuals’ rights to make personal decisions about their reproductive health, including surrogacy and IVF, ensuring everyone has the freedom to grow their families with dignity and equality. We also protected in-state healthcare providers offering abortion care, while ensuring out-of-state women seeking care can get the services they need in Michigan.

  • Prohibited Price Gouging: Passed legislation to protect Michiganders from unfair price hikes during a declared state of emergency, ensuring affordable access to essential goods and services.

  • Supporting Nurses: I voted to ban mandatory overtime for nurses, improving working conditions and protecting patient safety.

  • Protecting Consumers: Voted to crack down on subscription traps by requiring clear disclosures of automatic renewals.

  • Freedom to Read: Freedom of speech is the bedrock of our democracy. We fought against anti-book bans, protecting public and district libraries and working to ensure access to diverse perspectives.

  • Fighting Human Trafficking: Voted to strengthen protections for victims of human trafficking in Michigan.

  • Supporting Working Families: Required public employers to cover a greater share of employee health insurance premiums.

  • Advancing LGBTQ+ Rights: We’re making it easier for individuals to update their names and IDs, affirming dignity and equality for all under the law.

  • Fighting Gerrymandering in Counties: Politicians shouldn’t be able to pick their voters. We took a stand against partisan gerrymandering of county board districts, safeguarding fair representation for Michigan voters.

  • Combating Sexual Extortion: Introduced tougher penalties for sexual predators who extort innocent individuals, standing up for survivors and justice.

Historic Investments in Michigan Schools

Every child deserves a quality education, and this term, we achieved some of the most significant education reforms in Michigan’s history.

  • Universal Free School Meals: Provided free breakfast and lunch for every public school student in Michigan, saving families an average of $850 a year per child.

  • Debt Relief for Schools: Delivered over $100 million in critical debt relief to schools across Michigan, including Ypsilanti Community Schools. These funds allow schools to focus on what matters most — their students and teachers.

  • School Safety and Mental Health: Increased mental health and school safety funding for our students, totaling an estimated $5.9 million for our local school districts.

    • Ann Arbor Public Schools: $1.9 million.
    • South Lyon Community Schools: $946,500.
    • Northville Public Schools: $793,818.
    • Plymouth-Canton Community Schools: $1.8 million.

  • Support for Special Education: Provided funding to continue expanded support for special education students, providing a full foundation allowance plus required cost reimbursements for each student.

Creating a BRITER Future & Looking Ahead

The work continues to put people — like you — first. As we prepare for the next legislative session, I’m thinking of all the needs of our community and others like it across our state, focusing on the needs that matter most to you.

  • Investing in Public Transit and Local Roads: Reliable, accessible transportation is a cornerstone of economic opportunity. That’s why I’m fighting to increase funding for public transit and local roads across our state — connecting our communities and ensuring everyone can get to work, school or our small towns.

  • Building Trust in Government: The Preamble of the United States Constitution begins with “We the People,” reminding us that government derives its power and purpose from the people it serves. Transparency and accountability are essential to fulfilling that promise. I will continue to advocate for the passage of the BRITE Act in its entirety to continue the progress made towards transparency and accountability, closing loopholes and ensuring our public officials serve the people, not special interests.

  • Supporting Rare Disease Advocacy: Every person living with a rare disease deserves to have their voice heard and their unique issues addressed. That’s why I’m pushing to pass my Rare Disease Advisory Council bill. Bringing individuals and families directly impacted by rare diseases together with healthcare providers, researchers, and pharmaceutical experts, we can improve the quality of care, expand treatment options and provide hope to those who often feel unseen.

  • Improving Healthcare Access and Affordability: No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and paying for life-saving medication or childcare. Access to affordable healthcare is about dignity and security – knowing that when you or your child are sick, help is right there. That’s why I’m committed to lowering the cost of prescription drugs and fighting to expand access to high-quality, affordable healthcare and childcare.

  • Advancing Environmental Protections: I’m committed to advancing environmental protections that put our communities first — not polluters who can’t clean up after themselves. This means holding polluters accountable through strong polluter pay laws, reducing the amount of trash coming into Michigan from out of state, and giving local communities control over whether a landfill can expand in their area. By raising tipping fees to match those in neighboring states, we’ll provide increased funding to clean up toxic pollution sites, improve landfill oversight and recycling efforts, and redevelop unused land for the public good. These steps will protect our environment, give communities a say in their neighborhoods and ensure a cleaner, healthier Michigan for generations to come.

I am grateful to represent you in Lansing. Your voices and ideas have been critical to this process, and I am honored to continue serving our community. Together, we will keep building a Michigan that works for all of us.

Yours in service,

Jason Morgan, State Representative

Michigan’s 23rd House District
