LANSING, Mich., Feb. 6, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released her executive recommendations for the fiscal year 2025-26 state budget yesterday, proposing continued historic investments in public schools and infrastructure improvement. Some of the education highlights include a 4.1% increase in base per-pupil funding, for a total of $10,000 per pupil, and key investments in literacy coaches and instruction. The recommendation also included an increase of almost $99 million to improve state and local roads, highways and bridges across Michigan. Following the presentation of the Executive Recommendation, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, state Rep. Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn), issued the following statement:
“Parents are counting on us to improve education outcomes for their children. By raising per-pupil funding, we can invest in our teachers and our school infrastructure. This budget also continues investments in our local roads and transit systems, which is crucial to supporting our residents and our economy. Michiganders depend on drivable roads and accessible transportation to support their families.
“The House Democrats are ready to get this budget done on time, for our schools and local governments. We got it done the last two years — we can do it again. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get to work with Chair Bollin and Chair Anthony.”
