Dear Neighbor,

Hi, I’m Jason. I have the privilege to serve as your state representative for Washtenaw, Wayne and Oakland Counties. Here is some information that I hope you will find helpful, including updates and news from your state government.

March Is Reading Month

1

As a former teacher, I was beyond excited to participate in March Is Reading Month. To celebrate, I read to elementary students around the district and answered their questions about state government. Together, we discussed pressing issues like fixing our bumpy roads, treating everyone with respect, and combating the rise of fake Pokémon cards!

Reminder: Tax Returns Must Be E-Filed or Mailed by April 18

The Michigan Department of Treasury is reminding taxpayers that state individual income tax returns are due in less than a month. State individual income tax returns must be filed electronically or postmarked through the U.S. Postal Service by 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18.

Choosing electronic filing and direct deposit is convenient, safe and secure. Last year, more than 4.8 million Michigan taxpayers e-filed, which is 89% of state income tax filers.

For more information about e-filing, go to Michigan.gov/Taxes.

Creating a Rare Disease Advisory Council in the State of Michigan

2

Last week, my bill, House Bill 4167, passed the House with broad support from colleagues on both sides of the aisle! This legislation would create a Rare Disease Advisory Council within the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), advising the department and other state agencies on research, diagnosis and treatment efforts related to rare diseases.

As someone living with a rare disease (Becker’s muscular dystrophy), I know how hard it can be to access reliable information relating to conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 individuals in the U.S. I’m proud to lead the charge on this legislation, which will help provide resources and improve the quality of life of the 1 in 10 Michiganders who has a rare disease. This bill has been sent to the Senate for consideration.

Yours in service,

State Representative Jason Morgan
